I try and think of an interest the person has......say golf.....then I go to Ebay and
find a fast way to llok at 5,000 items a golfer might want that are not golf clubs....
all golfers have clubs......try it ...it saves not just money but time you save from shopping....
I should note that Ebay sells just as many NEW items as used.......long ago it seemed like it was mostly used junk you had to sort through to find something decent....

Rental Cars
Whenever you are going to rent a car at your destination airport,
avoid a long line, reserve online at 2 or 3 different agencies,I do the
cheapest one I can find and then Enterprise or Budget, then when you arrive use the reservation at the counter with the shortest line. The system does not require you to provide any more thatn your name and address so there is no penalty for mssing a reservation....saves time!

Tony Lin's Chinese Restaurant In Rockville
Another great lunchtime deal.......I read on the menu this last time this special is
offered Monday-Saturday which is unusual, normally deals are on the weeday only.
Go to the back page of the menu for a list of about 20 authentic dishes and with it you
get your choice of soup and fried rice or white rice.....I think they offer brown rice too.....
I like the whole fried fish with chili sauce, hot and sour soup, and plain rice.......you can also get
dishes such as beef stew and tendon, shrimp with tofu, boneless fish filet fried with vegetables,
pork dishes, chicken dishes.......all for $6.95.....the quality here is very good, and it is actually
a pretty well appointed restaurant, not the Ritz but comfortable surroundings, fairly quiet,
and a hidden gem so you can go in at Noon and still get a table and quick service...the whole
fish takes a few minutes longer to cook anything else pops out of the kitchen right away....
Tony Lin's 12015 Rockville Pike At Montrose Road in back of the Montrose Crossing Center
across from Giant Food.

Dollar Menu Items
I wander into Mcdonalds once every 3 months or so.....and when there I take advantage of their
dollar menu......8 items ranging drom a Double Cheeseburger to a small soda.....why not choose
from these items...they satisfy my Mcdonald craving just as much as a $2 quarterpounder would...they have a dollar salad and a chicken sandwich too.....24 hours a day.....I have tried the
Wendy's double stack for $1.19 it is a mini burger and it is okay but will not go back....I hear tale
that burger King now offers their double cheeseburger for $1 have not tried it yet but will do it
soon...

Rental DVD Choices
I aam a member of Netflix.....I enjoy it,not only for movies, but to catch the TV series I have
missed......I watch them from the first episode and they come 3 episodes on a disc so it watches
more like a movie that an hour a week TV show.....I enjoyed LOST this way as it took a few
episodes at a time to get the storyline...very exciting show though.....anyway....when you list a new release on your Netflix list you usually have to wait a few weeks until copies are available....
well I have found if you visit your local food store Giant etc.....they have a Redbox movie rental
machine in the front of the store.....you can go every Tuesday when new titles are released and usually see them the same night! And it only costs $1 and you need not return it until 9pm. the next day......does not have to be returned to the same store, any Redbox machine will do.....I do not
do this often but when I really want to see a new release it is worth $1 to do it.....Enjoy..

Book your hotel over the web
I was looking for 9 nights in Las Vegas for my December trip.....I used
my frequent flier miles for a free airline ticket ($30 Service Charge) and
I wanted to stay at or near Circus Circus...I normally book thru Circuscircus.com
BUT this time I searched a few other places,Vegas.com uses a booking agent called hotels.com
they were about $40 less than direct from Circus Circus......in the end I used bookit.com
which was $75 less and the whole stay was $228.00 which is about $25 per night....all taxes
and fees included....so search these big bokking agents for the best deal....

I saw last week Magruders had Grapfruit 4/$1.00 flour and it's winter wheat provides 5Lb.

Men's shoes Great Prices
Got to : http://www.rossstores.com/
This is for store locations etc......they are mainly known for women's clothe's and shoes....
but I noticed when I took Grandma there that they had men's slacks, shirts and shoes at
very reasonable prices.....I recently bout a pair of Skechers which are $60-$70 anywhere
you look for $29.00 and they are fine no defects at all.....but they have limited selection and
size so its kinda hit and miss.....The Ross I go to is in Rockville in the Federal Plaza south of Congressional Mall......Trader Joe's next door....

Bargain Chinese Lunch In Olney MD
I would say most of us have found the bargain lunch combinations at Chinese Restaurants
all over the area, heck nationwide...you get an egg roll and maybe a soup and some stir fry
for a reasonable price....a lot of food at a good price....a bargain...I will be blogging about these
a lot......quality varies wildly...price varies as well.....I found a gem in Olney Maryland which
is off the beaten track a bit BUT if you happen to be in Rockville this is 3 miles away and worth
the trip.......Shanghai Restaurant-3409 Morningwood Drive In Olney....Olney is a small town
so a better way to get you there is to say not the shopping center on the right but the one on the left off Georgia Avenue...you cannot miss it....ANYWAY......their lunch special is an unheard of
$4.95 and this includes an Eggroll, your choice of white or Fried Rice, choice of soup,AND your meal choice which numbered 12 choices as of today......shrimp with mixed veggies,General Tso's chicken, chicken with black bean sauce ( my favorite)....one of my friends ordered a large hot and
sour soup (one quart!)for $2.25 and a white rice $1 it was a lot to eat and I would say a healthy choice too......so I would not go out of my way,but if you are within 5 miles or so,GO FOR IT!
The food was not the best I have ever eaten....BUT ...it was enjoyable and a pleasant surprise...
I felt it was a great value....BTW this exact same meal runs $7.50 after 3pm. and the same rule holds true at most Chinese Restaurants....eat or take out at lunch and avoid the dinner meal price.....and I think you cannot go wrong.....

Really Cheap Baked Goods In Rockville
Okay I will not make a special trip to buy a box of $1 donuts, but I always have these 2 places on
radar so if I am in the area I pick up.................
Entenmens Outlet
1327 A Rockville Pike
Rockville,MD 20850
(Near Woodmont Country Club)
They have a one dollar rack that always has 2 kinds of donuts......but usually on weekdays they have cakes or danish that are dated that day or the next day so eat right away or all these freeze really well.......the $2 has their full assortment usually a few days away from expiration....breads
from Arnold are on average $1.50 each or 3 for $3....I can never eat that much bread...
Hostess Bakery Outlet
1175 Taft Street
Rockville,MD 20850
Really cheap Hostess favorites from your youth......ho ho's.....chocolate cupcakes,twinkies....
about $1 a box......again watch the dates of expiration but more chemical preservatives here
so do not worry as much.....they carry the Beefsteak rye breads for $1 a loaf!!!!!!!!! And on my
last visit they carry a fany line of onion rolls also for $1....you can also wander up like many in the neighborhood and plunk down 35 cents and they sell you one pack of cupcakes,or twinkies,etc...
right now they also have seasonal fruitcakes $3 and cookies $3....
On weekends these places are crowded and get picked clean prett fast so for best variety
try midweek during the day.....Enjoy!

Save big money on clogged drains
I learned this one the hard way..........the main drain in my house gets clogged about once
a year......they tell me the pitch of the drain out to the street might be uphill and the sludge builds up.....anyway a call to Roto Rooter is $500 and Econo rooter is up to $450 now and I
will tell you it is robbery.....he brings a motorized snake in and runs it about 90 feet in 30 minutes clears the drain and wanders down the road to steal another $500 where do I get a license to do this? Anyway,2 better solutions........you can rent a motorized snake at the rental
place try Rentals Unlimited on Southlawn Drive in Rockville,or bit the bullet and buy a motorized snake....funny enough I looked and it will run you $500........but then you can make money off your friends and neighbors!!! Just trying to save you some money from my past mistakes!

White Flint Metro Best ChineseLunch Buffet
Fortune Star Buffet
Monday - Friday Lunch is $8.25 only coupon I have seen is in the mail for 10% off and free lunch on your birthday with a party of 4 or more.
This sounds expensive but what they offer makes this worth a try.....if you are like me you will
get hooked on this place.
They show you to your table and ask you what drink you would like ( included ) I like hot tea
and water or orange soda.....then you can attack......grab a plate and wander around this fairly spacious place...seats about 70 or so...there is a sushi chef rolling fresh rolls the entire lunch
service.....rolls with salmon, tuna, california are all represented here....rolls with the rice on the outside,on the inside, lumped with fish laying across it (Inari I believe)......they even have deep fried sushi with colored mayo squeezed out in a decorative pattern....what a unique and wonderful taste.....one you never make at home! I like the California rolls and the spicy tuna
is very nice.....my sister Keiko loves the salmon sushi.....tastes like buttery fish......on the main steam table you will always find deep fried shrimp in the shell, deep fried seasoned salt squid,
mussels in black bean sauce, blue crabs in ginger scallion sauce, and your standard fare of General
Tso's chicken,Beef and Brocolli,Lo Mein, and at the end of this steam table always sits a pizza
of some flavor.....I have seen pineapple a lot.....behind steam table number one you have number
2 which has a different selection each time I go....Fried Chicken wings are good here, clams stuffed with cheese ( Never tried these ) Har Gow shrimp dumplings like Dim Sum have appeared on the end of this table the last few times I have visited....perpendicular to these 2 tables you will find a smaller 3rd. steam table that has steamer baskets with dim sum dumplings of varying sorts, rice and fried rice, and I like the small pork spare rib bones in black bean sauce, and
I admit to liking the chicken feet....weird to look at but tastes like the skin on a chicken wing.....
along the outer walls you will find a meager salad bar, fruit bar, desert bar ( do not pick the pastry
that looks like chocolate,it is brown bean paste),iced seafood bar with steamed shrimp and at times oysters on the half shell.....they have a soup bar with Hot and Sour,Egg Drop, and Won ton ,
but they also have 2 kinds of congee or Jook....thick rice soup.....they have a Mongolian BBQ where you select your own ingredients and ask the chef to stir fry them right before your eyes..
I have not tried this as it is recommended you tip $1 for the chef....and c'mon there is so much other great food to try.....if you are lucky at times throughout the service they will bring out
one tray of snow crab claws, stir fried lobster, roast duck, steamed blue crabs......these are real
treats and you will be lucky to get any as the bins are emptied really fast by hungry diners......
ask for another soda or go and refill it yourself they do not mind...I like a nice bowl of ice cream
to finish off my meal here...they have a soft serve with Vanilla,Chocolate and mixed...it is self
serve so get a huge bowl of it......the food is consistently good here...the sushi alone is worth the
offering price, noon on a weekday can be quite busy...try and get there at 11:30 to see them loading up the bins for the first time...I see a lot of government workers from the building next door.....but I think if word got out about this place the line would be out the door...for now it is not so let's keep it our secret.....well I am off to Fortune Star....

Buy beer for the best price around.....deli meat too..
This takes a bit of time each week but watch your weekly sales flyers on beer
and liqour.....if you are down in DC the Calvert Woodley store right on Connecticut Avenue
at the Van Ness Metro stop is consistently one of the best price stops around for not only beer,
wine, and spirits, but they have a real NY style deli, where the pastrami is the best I have ever
tasted, this goes on sale every other week for $6.99 a pound for regular cut which is leaner that Giant or Safeways' lean cut....anyway.......even if you do not ask they slice the pastrami thin enough that it just has a texture that offers a really nice bite in a sandwich with say rye and swiss.....anyway.....back to the beer......I regularly find my brand of Natural light for $10.99 a case...go to google Calvert Woodley and also Circle Liquors at Chevy Chase circle also on Connecticut Avenue and see their online weekly ad......you will be amazed at some of their prices...again try and buy what's on sale.....regular prices are not all that great....BTW when
pastrami is not on sale their Corned Beef is....also $6.99 a pound and is awesome!!!

Save millions of dollars by making your own pizza!!
Have you ever really sat back and thought about how much money you spend on pizza?
It is so easy to get really good at making a great pizza at home and once you get used to it
and comfortable you will never order out....well not never...you have to get out every now and then.....anyway I think that you have to make a decent pie or else this plan will not
work...but on a recent beach vacation everyone wanted pizza one night....from previous experience I knew they were about to fork out about $40 for 2 delivery pizzas.....I made my regular pizza recipe which follows below and everyone was quite pleased..total cost approximately.....$3.......for everything.....so here goes:
Recipe to make one 12" pizza
1 cup of room temperature water
1 Tbs. Instant Dry Yeast ( Buy from Costco $4 is a years supply the small packets are expensive)
1Tsp. Sugar
2 Cups of Bread Flour ( Only Use Bread Flour, many reasons but trust me,please)
Up to 1Tbs. Salt (Optional,I have made dozens of pies without salt)
1 Cup Pizza suace (Can be my favorite Dom Pepino,Ragu makes good sauce,or plain tomato sauce)
1-2 Cups of Shredded Mozzerella Cheese ( Provelone is also great or combine cheeses)
Any other meat toppings or veggies you would like...
* Please own a stand mixer and a pizza stone....if you do not already have these invest in
these items you will get paid back,I promise.
Put baking stone on a rack in the lower part of your oven and turn on bake 395-400 this
is recommended to preheat for one hour. I have done it for less than that but an hour is best.
Place water in the bowl and sprinkle in yeast and sugar...it should start to bloom in a minute or so......foams a little breaks apart and gets cloudy......add the 2 cups of flour and sprinkle you
salt on top of the dry flour, salt can kill yeast so it should be added this way only....start you mixer with dough hook installed at slow then move up to medium.....here is the secret that I found makes this really easy.....watch the dough stick to the bottom center of the bowl, this happens almost every time......add flour a tablespoon at a time until the hook just picks up this sticky wet dough in the bottom middle of the bowl, this is the main reason I found this recipe works everytime....most everyone I know feels that they cannot make the dough consistently so they
have given up trying.....please try this.....I make pizza at least once a week...anyway.....keep running the mixer kneading the dough for at least 5 minutes.....you can knead up to 10 minutes...
stop the mixer.....you can transfer dough to a bowl, cover and let rise for an hour, get out your
pizza peel, sprinkle it with cornmeal, shape your pie,top it with sauce and cheese etc.....slide it
onto the baking stone....IMPORTANT...throw an entire cup and a half of water on the oven floor
and close the oven and bake 17-20 minutes until the cheese is browning up...spotty brown is great.....here is what I do after the mixer stops.....I place a piece of parchment paper on the counter about 12" x 16" put vegetable oil on my left hand,I remove the dough hook with the dough attached,it is always attached to the hook, with my clean right hand,I work the dough ball off of the hook with my greases left hand onto the parment paper,I cover it with a bowl,I use a
large lid off of one of my pots, leave it for an hour.......after the time has elapsed I shape it into
a pizza of any shape I want to,this my pizza and it does not have to be round, most of mine are
nice ovals though........I then cover it and let it rise again up to one hour,an hour results in the best pie,if you only have 30 mins. it will work.......I spread my sauce, cheese, then toppings......
SECRET HINT......I then slide the pie off the counter and onto a pizza box I have saved and use the pizza box as a peel to slide the pie onto the stone so you do not have to own a pizza peel.....
I owned one but frankly I did not like the cornmeal stuck to the bottom of the pizza.......anyway
the little hints may seem small but they have helped me find a way to create a very acceptable
some say incredible, delicious,HOMEMADE PIZZA.....cost for a plain cheese about $1.00-$1.25
depends on how much cheese you use....what sauce you use....but really this a way to feed that
pizza craving we all get and save money.....I found that Dom Pepino pizza sauce is the best
tasting commercial sauce on the market,Ragu Pizza sauce in the jar is a long distance 2nd....
but it is widely available.....our local delivery place uses Dom Pepino...I can be coerced into sending you a can or ask Santa for a taste....another hint is the cheese is important,I have tried
the off brand cheapy on sale cheese and it does not work for me...I would say if you are in a gourmet mood get some buffalo milk mozzerella and have the best pie of your life,I found Kraft brand mozzerella woks really well,is easy to find, tasted great. Another hint...the reason your splash a cup and a half of water on the oven floor is it creates steam in your oven....this will
make your crust chewy as it will be crisp from baking on the hot stone it will be a little bit chewy
like the Papa Johns pizza we all know has that wonderful chewy crust.....think about it..to make bagels, and we know how chewy they are, they dump the rounds of dough in boiling water first
and then bake them into wonderful chewy consistency......I really hope you try this recipe....
if I convert only one of you into a home pizza maker than maybe it will be spread to someone else
and so on....I know this seems like a lot of work but you will feel so accomplished when you
bite into this pizza.....and I cannot tell you how great it feels when someone else eats it and really
says it is one of the best pizzas they have ever eaten....Enjoy!!!!!!!!!

A Modern way of thinking................
I was shopping at the Vitamin Shoppe where I normally spend about $20
every other month when it hit me......maybe I could do better on the web.....
well a trip to Google and I found puritans pride where I was able to buy all
my vitamins for about half price....so just a thought.....now when I am in a retail
brick and mortar store....I always ask myself could I do better on the web.....or
maybe even on Ebay......worth a look....

Specials at Bloom this week
I normally go to the Bottom Dollar version of Food Lion but this Bloom version has some
deals at times......this week there is not a whole lot but the following caught my eye.
Pork Shoulder Roast is $ 1.29 a Pound........great price BUT you have to buy a whole one and it runs about $10.00 so if you can use almost 8 pounds of pork should this is a deal,I have seen this store run it for 99 cents a pound and you can buy 3 pounds or so....I will wait for that.....
"The Philly Steak" these are off brand Steakums......but buy one get one free in the 24 oz. size
makes this worth mentioning.....makes great steak subs at home but extremely high fat content....
"Land of Frost" shaved deli meat is the off brand of Carl Buddig and 2 for the price of one in 10 oz. is a pretty good deal......this meat is paper thin...but will make a LOT of sandwiches....
NB.....you must register and carry the Bloom magnetic card to get these prices....Enjoy,Bob

Steal of a Deal at Cleveland Park Metro Stop in DC
On Wednesdays at Nanny O'Briens Pub 3319 Connecticut Avenue NW (One block south of Metro Station) you can enjoy 25 cent chicken wings......they have 4 different styles including
Buffalo,Nuclear Buffalo (Not that spicy),Maryland Bay spice, and some sort of sweet wing.
They have to be ordered 4,8,or 12 at a time but I can tell you from 3 weeks experience that
4 wings will fill you up as say a lunch portion,if you are hungry splurge the 2 bucks and get 8
wings and you can get 4 of one flavor and 4 of another.....these wings are deep fried and then sauced so they have an underlying crunch to them...but more important here is that they run really large.......this can be inconsistant but larger than I have encountered at all the other places...I am not sure how long they are going to continue this and it runs until 10 pm....hard to get a table but always a seat at the bar..Enjoy,Bob

Great Grocery deal this week...Save $$$$$$
Food Lion grocery split their stores into two different brand names......Bloom (Higher Priced)
and Bottom Dollar Food (Obviously Low Priced)......Living in Rockville I frequent the Bottom Dollar store located on Rt.355 at this stage named Frederick Road store is at 16567 S.Frederick Road technically in Gaithersburg Maryland,it is located just north of Rt.355 and Shady Grove Road......Join their shoppers club and get a magnetic card to qualify for bargains like they have this week:
Listed as 20 for $10 you DO NOT HAVE TO BUY 20 to get the 50 cent price per item......
at least not at Bottom Dollar....so for 50 cents this week and up to and including Tuesday of next week.....you can buy:
Roll of 25 Feet of Aluminum Foil
10.66 Oz. of Their brand of American Cheese Product (Smart Option Brand)
Food Lion Brand Pot Pies (Beef,Turkey,& Chicken)
One Pound Of Food Lion Brand Raw Long Grain Rice ( Not very long grain but great price)
Their Brand of small frozen pizza including ones with supreme toppings ( Smart Option Brand)
Now I agree you may not make the trip for the above but here are a few other itms on sale here this week:
2 Liter Coke Products including Sprite etc....... 87 Cents
Food Lion Brand All 12 oz. Beef Hot Dogs $ 1.50
In Produce Cabbage is 39 cents a Lb.
If the above bargains are not enough to entice you to visit, please let me tell you their everyday
prices on most non perishable items are really great.....I buy all condiments there as they run
about half of what you can pay at Giant or Safeway....there is always a type of meat worth buying
that is probably not advertised.....almost always have chicken parts of some sort for 79 cents or less per pound......their store band snacks and crackers and cookies are so low priced you have to try them at least once even if you normally only buy Lay's potato chips...try theirs once.............
Now another hint I would like to pass on is the fact that if you only buy the itmes that are on sale you are winning,if you buy in addition the items that are not on sale the store is winning.....for
example...this week if you wander in and want ground beef, ice cream, shredded cheese, and a
couple veggis that are not cabbage.......you will pay quite a premium and will not be satisfied
with the overall experience......if you wait, all of these items will get their chance in the sale flyer,
so I guess I am saying it saves money to cook the things that are on sale when possible instead
of cooking what you crave at that moment. Happy hunting,Bob
